Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2019 Format: Blu-ray Wow, this, the second attempt at a Black Christmas remake, is a misguidedly bad film. This movie carries a heavy pro-women, anti-misogyny/patriarchal-control-of-the-system (particularly in the college environment) vibe to the whole thing. Let me make it clear that I support the message, it's the way it's executed that I have a problem with. You ever went to an original college play because of a class or to support a friend, and it feels like it's trying to be deep about something, but you can't stand it? This is that movie in a nutshell. (In the director/co-screenwriter and other co-screenwriter's defense, this film had a pretty short production schedule. Not saying the movie would've been better necessarily, just saying. ) The movie beats you over the head with the message. Plot and dialogue comes in second, less than second. The characters are extremely frustrating as they act and talk in a way that isn't plausible at all. A lot of them aren't people, just talking points. There are a lot of one-dimensional misogynists in this film who say nothing but the most obvious and basic chauvinistic lines. It gets really painful. Also, the killer's or killers' plan has so many loopholes. I know that horror movies often require a suspension of disbelief but even this sinks way below an accordingly low bar. You can see where the plot is going pretty early on, which makes waiting through the slow-paced first two thirds of the film a pain. In the brief moments where people aren't speaking for or against the equality of women, there are a few lines that could've been funny, but none of the cast makes the dialogue work, especially Brittany Grady, who is supposed to be comic relief. Veteran actor Cary Elwes is in this and even he gives a terrible performance. As for the actual horror in this, there are a few good weapon ideas but there isn't enough to salvage the film. The movie was originally R-rated but got cut down to PG-13 which hurt it. I'm not one of those "R-rated horror movies only" guys, but the problem is that the editor clearly just ended a couple kills abruptly. There was no attempt to reshoot or reedit scenes to make them run smoothly. If you like horror but not rape in your horror be forewarned that this movie will get uncomfortable. To the movie's credit, the cinematography is good. There are a few post-kill shots that are effective. The one major thing this movie has in common with the original is that it goes with this stark reality look to it. There is an effectively cold feel to the whole thing. The campus and surrounding houses look like a real college environment. I'd say this is about as bad as the last Black Christmas remake just in a different way. You want to see a Christmas-themed horror film? I suggest the original or Krampus. Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2019 Format: Blu-ray Black Christmas constantly shouts buzzwords and catchphrases and never truly has anything to say. It’s an abysmal diet-horror misfire that will be a blemish on the resume of everyone involved. The characters in Black Christmas are glorified internet comments come to life, a Twitter argument projected on a 60-foot screen. Nobody ever talks to each other like human beings and everyone just seems to continually shout surface-level observations about what it’s like to be a young person in 2019 without ever really say anything truthful. Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2019 Format: Blu-ray Man, I was super excited for this when it was first announced. I love slashers, I love Christmas, and I love Christmas slashers. Blumhouse did so well with 'Halloween' I could only imagine how epic Black Christmas would've been. Boy, did they mess this up! I heard it was going to be bad, because it was slapped with a PG13 rating and I knew it had a feminist agenda, but this movie was stereotypically feminist to the point where they are practically shoving it down your throat. They took away Billy, the original killer and replaced him with a cult of college boys who are misogynistic and under a spell due to some black sludge coming out of a statue of the founder of their college. I'm dead serious! Our hero is Riley, a sorority woman who was sexually attacked by the AKO fraternity president Brian Huntley. She and her sorority sisters enter a singing contest that mocks the fraternity. Soon after, they all start getting harassed and threatening texts. Some of the girls start to go missing, and that's when the cult of he-man woman haters start attacking. It's up to Riley and her gang of strong independent women to fight back. This movie was not made with a good story or to be scary, it's just made to appease the Feminazi's, and that's just sad. I'm sure I'll watch this again someday, but just do yourself a favor and watch the original classic instead. This re-remake makes the 2006 version look like 'The Godfather Part II' I would not recommend BLACK CHRISTMAS!!! Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2019 Format: Prime Video Is Black Christmas (2019) a perfect film? No. But is it the atrocious mess that people who haven’t even seen it are claiming? No, not at all. The truth is that Black Christmas is a very topical film that was clearly made by women, for women. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Yes, in a few parts the social commentary felt a bit heavy handed. But guess what? The original Black Christmas also contains content regarding women being women that shocked audiences at the time with its frank, in your face nature. Those who are upset about this film having “an agenda” or being “too political” would be well-served by watching the original Black Christmas again, which is, at its core, a film about abortion and (a lack of) female agency that came out shortly after the Roe vs. Wade decision. This modern reimagining of Black Christmas has many nods to the original while still telling an original story. There’s much social commentary to uncover about toxic masculinity, women sticking together instead of tearing each other down, etc. It starts a bit slow, but the tension increases around the halfway point. Once the killer gets into the house, the movie kicks into high gear. The packed theater I saw this in was full of engaged viewers. The men often looked uncomfortable. The women often cheered. Overall, there was a lot of screaming, laughing, and yelling at the characters. If you’re opposed to this movie because it’s female-centric, then you should take a deep look at why this bothers you so much. If you have an issue with the PG-13 rating, remember that many beloved horror movies were rated PG-13. This film has a lot of social commentary, but it’s also quite simply satisfying and a lot of fun. It also deserves to be judged on its own merits. Because no, this isn’t the original. But that doesn’t make it a bad movie.

Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2017 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase NOTE: This is for the Scream Factory Collector's Edition, released in 2016/2017. Look under the reviewer name to see what version they are reviewing, or go to verified purchases and set what you want. Otherwise, you are looking at every release ever and people's thoughts on them, plus random commentary on the movie itself. This is not a movie review, you can find plenty of them, but more commentary on the new release. Shout/Scream Factory is the best thing to happen to horror movies. Really, without them, we would be missing so many movies outright, and their transfers are phenomenal. That is the bright point with Black Christmas; in the past, watching this movie meant tuning into really dark darks and blurry compositions, which hurt the movie in the eyes of a lot of people. I had, for example, shown it to people and their takeaway was impacted by the older transfer's lack of quality. Scream Factory fixes that with this 2K scan from the negative itself. On the two-disc Collector's edition, you have the normal addition of the reversible slipcover, which allows the newer cover art of their commissioned picture. Personally, I like them both and I always like seeing how they display the movie years after-the-fact. Aside from the 2K scan (which I cannot say enough about, because it remedies so many darkness issues), the first disc includes 3 audio tracks (producer/director Bob Clark, actors Keir Dullea and John Saxon, and Nick Mancuso as Billy). I always like those, because they give you a feel about movies from before everything was cataloged. Disc Two includes an interview with Art Hindle, The 12 Days of Black Christmas documentary, Black Christmas Revisited, Black Christmas Legacy, On Screen: Black Christmas, Archival interviews, the theatrical trailer, tv and radio spots, and more. Scream Factory gives you a LOT on their movies (their release of The Thing, for example, is the best movie I have ever seen when it comes to extras), and I think they did a lot with this. The 2K scan alone makes it well worth considering. Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2018 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase In my book, it's now official. While by no means being a bad film, Halloween (1978) is probably the MOST overrated horror flick ever made. Also, while Mario Bava still holds the crown as the undisputed grandfather of the slasher film (The Girl Who Knew Too Much, Blood and Black Lace and A Bay of Blood) and as the greatest cinema genius of all time, Black Christmas IS the blueprint for all subsequent American slasher films and a MASTERPIECE. There's just the right amount of atmosphere (mostly due to excellent art direction, especially in the color coordination area), inventiveness in the camera and sound department, competent performances, ultra-eerie dissonant and minimalist piano and string score and even character development to create genuine tension and unease, not just expectation as with most slashers. As for my copy, there's nothing wrong with it. Even though there are no captions or subtitles, sounds and looks pretty crisp, with very good extras. After the HUGE disappointment that The Exorcist III "director's cut" turned out to be, I probably wouldn't buy anything else from the company that just recently released this and that title. Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2017 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase An awesome and little known suspense-thriller with great turns by the beautiful Olivia Hussey and hilarious Margot Kidder as sorority sisters and a deranged killer on the loose. I held off on reviewing this Blu-Ray release until Shout Factory fixed the audio issues on the mono track, but now that I have received the replacement disc, I am excited to recommend this outstanding restoration of one of the seminal slasher movies. I especially love those gaudy 1970s Christmas lights in the excellent 2K rendering of this superlative horror film. The killer "Billy" is truly frightening as he raves on the phone and I really appreciate that the mystery of who he is or what his motivations are is left unresolved; such a stark distinction to the unfortunate killer monologues that dominate slashers today. Strongly recommended for any horror film fans! Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2016 Format: Prime Video Verified Purchase On of the best horror movies ever. Unforgettable to those who have seen it. Predates the slasher horror rules and gave birth to horror tropes that been used over and over again. Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2019 Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase This is an ancient movie that is listed as a collector's edition, but there is nothing special about it. First, we received this movie and it was not packaged like most movies. No plastic wrap (keep this in mind b/c it is important in a minute). Yes, we did watch it and it was horrible. No plot, no conclusion to the "story, " it made no sense at all. After realizing there was nothing "collector" about this edition and wondering why this old turd was $25, we decided to return it. It cost $4 to ship back, even though I am a prime member. And, they only refunded us $13 because it was not returned in its original packaging. You know, the packaging that it did not come with? Yes, we did watch it, but I am just saying we can't return it in a condition it did not come in. Top international reviews 4. 0 out of 5 stars Silent Night, Evil Night... Now that i have it on blu ray this will be my Christmas movie and it will be tradition to watch it every year just like Halloween i guessed it Halloween and you can figure out Friday the 13th! This version i think it's a German version but you can choose the original audio track, which sounds really good! I'd def give it the thumbs up! If you haven't seen it and love 70s horror like Halloween then you'll love this. A sorority house and a maniac called Billy you can't ask for more! Report abuse 5. 0 out of 5 stars Black Christmas Poem Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 8, 2015 Verified Purchase It was the night before Christmas and all through the house, Lay corpses and blood, Echoing the screams and shouts. Of all the helpless victims of billy the kid, Who had his Christmas sole from him not like you should. A night of mayhem were peace cannot be found, All wrapped up for unwrapping the pin head frowns. And the Christmas and the Christmases after that will never forget, That a Black Christmas is never forgotten not never forget! 4 people found this helpful Outstanding Horror Movie Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 22, 2010 Verified Purchase I first saw Black Christmas at the cinema, more years ago than I care to remember. I bought it on Amazon as a christmas gift to myself last year and even after all these years it still has the capacity to shock and entertain me. Aside from middle of the night screenings on Channel Four this film hardly ever appears on either terrestrial or cable. As a shocker it is 100% original, it pre dates both Halloween and Friday the 13th yet hardly anyone seems to have heard of it and even fewer people seem to be aware the effects it had on its far more illustrious and in my opinion slightly inferior shocker relatives. The cast are excellent John "B movie king" Saxon, Margot Kidder and Olivia Hussey are all standouts. Black Christmas will make you laugh, shudder and jump in equal measures. If you are a fan of ground breaking, CGI free original and pure horror this is the perfect film for you. After being at the upper end pricewise it has come down significantly in price. So buy now to avoid disappointment but only if you enjoy being scared. 7 people found this helpful The original and still the best! Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 21, 2016 Verified Purchase Brilliant film!!!!! I had not even heard of it before but like it says, it IS the forerunner of all the horror commerdy stalker slasher films! It's brilliantly directed and over acted and you have GOT to see it! One person found this helpful Superb slasher horror with amazing picture quality on the Blu ray Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 13, 2016 Verified Purchase A fantastic picture renovation on this superb slasher/ thriller Blu ray. Much better than the DVD version. I would have given this 5 stars but unfortunately on the German copy i had the English language option was out of sync with the actors' mouths. The seller has agreed to a refund and Im hoping the next copy will not have this language fault. If you like horrors like Halloween and Friday 13th you will love this early slasher. Great performances from Margot Kidder, Olivia Hussey and John Saxon. 2 people found this helpful BRILLIANT HORROR FILM WITH SCARES AND TWIST ABOUND THANK YOU. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 1, 2015 Verified Purchase Such a classic! I love it so much - I have very fond memories of watching it as a kid (maybe not such a good idea of the babysitter's at the time since I was very young) but the story is just fantastic and so full of suspense! I love it, thank you for reuniting me with one of my favourite horror movies! Thank you. It's a classic. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 20, 2019 Verified Purchase Creepy, suspenseful and dark. This christmas gift brings nothing but sorrow and blood red death. 1. 0 out of 5 stars Grainy, grainy picture Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 29, 2018 Verified Purchase The film is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ One of my favourites. The quality of this Blu-ray transfer is the problem, even the picture quality of the old DVD is much better. Stick with the German Blu-ray. Ring Ring(Hello) Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 28, 2016 Verified Purchase One of the original 70s stalk and slash classic if you like Halloween and Scream, you will enjoy this film Five Stars Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 6, 2018 Verified Purchase Wholesome family fun. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 29, 2016 Verified Purchase One of the best slasher movies ever. The crank caller has a filthy mouth though. You might wanna cover your ears at certain parts. Hope his mother doesn't hear him talk like that. Report abuse.
This was loads of fun! And had a lot to say about our vile rape culture.
Well acted, some nice chills, not as good as the original (few films are) but better than the remake. Somewhat dodgy supernatural stuff in the finale aside it was a solid B horror for me... 6.5/10
Also, anyone carrying on about the message being too heavy just doesn't like the message. I notice everyone was fine with the heavy handed 'get out. 🤔.
